During a recent standardized testing field test, I saw firsthand how something as simple as not having enough spare memory on student MacBook Airs can create big challenges. Several students couldn’t update their macOS to the required version — and without that update, they couldn’t even launch the testing platform.
It was a real reminder that tech readiness isn’t just about having devices — it’s about making sure those devices are ready to perform.
If your students use MacBooks, it’s worth checking storage early. In macOS Ventura or later, go to:
Apple menu → System Settings → General → Storage
From there, you can see what’s taking up space and manage it more easily.
Some simple steps can make a big difference:
• Move large media files (Photos, iMovie & GarageBand projects, etc.) to external drives or iCloud
• Delete old downloads and backups
• Empty the Trash (it still counts toward storage!)
• Ask students with shared laptops to check unused accounts or files
Sometimes, a quick cleanup is all that’s needed to make sure testing — or even a routine update — goes smoothly.
As we continue to rely on digital tools and assessments, it’s important to keep in mind that a little digital housekeeping can go a long way toward keeping testing days stress-free!
