My hope is that while celebrating Black History and Women’s History Month, students will engage in a more exciting and meaningful way to learn about a notable African American woman. Students will explore the life and contributions of Katherine Johnson through multiple formats, including books and database articles. Since I see my students once a week for 50 minutes, this lesson has been divided into several sessions to allow for deeper understanding and creativity.
Lesson Steps:
1) Begin by discussing with students the types of stickers they enjoy placing on their water bottles and devices. Ask: What do these stickers say about us? Explain that today they will design stickers inspired by the life and accomplishments of Katherine Johnson.
2) Introduce Katherine Johnson by reading the story Counting on Katherine by Helaine Becker. Pause throughout to discuss key moments, themes, and historical context.
3) Instruct students to further explore Katherine Johnson’s life using the FactCite database to deepen their understanding.
4) Review the planning worksheet for the sticker design. In the following weeks, students will plan and then use Keynote to design custom digital stickers celebrating Katherine Johnson’s achievements.

What an imaginative idea Dolo Frost! This is a great way to encourage creative learning about important contributions during Black History and Women's History Months. The sticker creation will transfer what they've learned into art and, in the process, certainly will help them remember the significance of these history heroes
If your students have the capability they can also make digital stickers via Photos. I just made one from a Katherine Johnson portrait that I had added to my Photos on iPhone. Easy to do and fun using the Markup Tool.
And now I have Katherine Johnson's sticker to place on mail, messages, notes or Freeform that I make during Black and Woman's History Months as a reminder of her contributions- thank you!
