I’ve been looking for ways to amplify student voice and encourage more authentic speaking opportunities for my multilingual 6th learners during math instruction.
My students are currently learning unit rates in enVision Math, and I wanted to connect the concept to something many of them genuinely love: soccer.
Using Apple Numbers, students research real soccer player statistics like goals, assists, and games played, then calculate and discuss unit rates such as goals per game and assists per game. Throughout the activity, students record audio responses directly in Numbers to practice explaining their mathematical thinking aloud.
One of my goals was to move beyond students simply “finding the answer” and instead encourage them to:
⚽ explain what the numbers mean
⚽ compare players using evidence
⚽ practice academic vocabulary
⚽ build confidence speaking about math
I’ve been especially intentional about supporting multilingual learners through:
- bilingual vocabulary supports
- visuals and color coding
- structured sentence frames
- collaborative discussion
- multimodal responses through audio recording
I’m excited to continue refining this learning experience!
