Using Apple Keynote Animation to Show Addition on a Number Line
Visual models are essential in building understanding of and development of number sense. My first grade ELL students have been learning about addition on a number line. To make the number line strategy both engaging and solidify the concept we used the animation features in Apple Keynote to create dynamic number lines.
Why Animate Addition on a Number Line?
Animation shows movement—and addition is all about movement.
Animating addition helps students:
- See addition as starting at a number and moving forward
- Create a bridge from concrete models (manipulatives) to abstract notation.
- Connect symbolic equations (e.g., 3 + 4) with spatial reasoning
My first grade students were able to take a Keynote template and animate a bunny hopping along the number line to solve simple addition equations. They were fully engaged in the task and enjoyed seeing the bunny hop once they completed their animations.
Animating addition on a number line in Apple Keynote transforms an abstract idea into a clear, visual story: start here, move forward, land there.
